Poem in Birchsong, Volume II

I’m so grateful to editors, Alice Wolf Gilborn, Carol Cone, David Mook, Marcia Angermann, Peter Bradley and Monica Stillman for including “Spring Ritual” in Birchsong Volume II: Poetry Centered in Vermont. This piece is about the ritual each spring of needing to treat my husband’s sore muscles with tiger balm. It occurred to me one morning that the spouses of farmers have probably been doing this same thing for generations, rubbing balm into the backs of their loved ones, offering a few small moments of relief.
